Puppy Emergency - Update
The Rainbow Bridge gained an angel, and our hearts are broken.
The doctors at Westlake Animal hospital tried everything to save little Ariel but unfortunately she was positive for distemper and unable to fight it. She initially seemed to be holding her own through the weekend but took a downturn on Monday.
She had a battery of tests since she came into our rescue including a test for a liver shunt that turned out to be negative. She was not responding to anti-seizure medication and we could not let her suffer.
She was a big girl in a tiny body that just craved being held and comforted.
Please let this be a warning to everyone to get your puppies vaccinated and follow their veterinarian's recommendations so an innocent girl like Ariel doesn't have to lose her life needlessly.
Thanks to Sharon Calcote and Caryn Spencer for fostering her and trying to help keep her comfortable and know that at least for a few days she was loved.
Thank you to all who donated to Ariel’s care. Your generosity allows us to do everything we can to try to save the dogs that come into our rescue.
We recently received an urgent call to pick up an 8-week-old puppy from Austin Animal Center that was found and brought to the shelter having seizures. Our incredible team jumped into action and transported Ariel to Westlake Animal Hospital.
She was treated with IV fluids and anti-seizure medications and is currently still hospitalized in Westlake's isolation ward.
The doctors are unsure if she has distemper, has a congenital abnormality or has had some injury or toxic exposure. Parvovirus has been ruled out. Initial labwork results were pretty normal and we are currently waiting on additional test results to determine her exact medical issues.
We were encouraged that she is wanting to eat this morning and so far on medication has not had any additional seizures.
We would like to thank Austin Animal Center for contacting us so quickly, Trina Eilers for orchestrating her transfer out and Sharon Calcote for dropping what she was doing to transport her to the hospital.
