Little Wonder's Big Fight

We were contacted late Wednesday (July 2nd) night by an emergency clinic about a relinquished 12 week old pug puppy in critical condition. Her blood glucose and body temperature were very low, she was emaciated and had an infected wound on her rear leg. The puppy had suffered an accidental injury a couple weeks before and had a dislocated hip. The bandage originally placed on her hind leg had worn through the skin and through her achilles tendon.

She was dehydrated, vomiting and had diarrhea. Fortunately she was negative for parvo. She has been on multiple medications and on IV fluids receiving dextrose to combat low blood sugar. She had a feeding tube placed since she was refusing to eat. Our update yesterday from the EC was somewhat encouraging as they reported she started to eat some and was maintaining a normal body temperature. They are hoping to wean her off the dextrose if she continues eating on her own. The status of her rear leg is unknown at this time. We don't know if we will be able to save her leg or not but the focus right now is keeping her alive and getting her stable enough to leave the EC.

Update July 5, 2026: Wonder was released from the EC yesterday. She is stable. We finally have a better understanding of why she was so sick. The doctors felt the bandage placed for her dislocated hip had tightened around her lower abdomen restricting her ability to urinate. When first admitted her urine was very bloody so she is on an antibiotic for a bladder infection as well as her leg wounds. She was positive for an intestinal parasite called coccidia that can rapidly cause diarrhea and dehydration so she is on a medication for that. She is also on a second dewormer for other intestinal parasites as a precaution. She was diagnosed with a severe corneal ulcer in her left eye that caused it to rupture. She is on four different eye medications and we are hoping the eye can be saved. Again she is stable, on pain medication and seems comfortable despite all her medical issues. She was even able to have a bath yesterday. So many issues for a tiny girl to be dealing with. She is eating well on her special diet, has not vomited and her diarrhea resolved. She is currently being fostered by our medical director and will go to Westlake Animal Hospital tomorrow morning to be reevaluated by our vets there. We've had several Heartbeat Babies donated to our rescue over the years and Wonder seems very comforted by hers. Thank you to all that have donated so far. We also want to give a huge thanks to the doctors and staff at Central Texas Veterinary Specialty and Emergency for not only contacting us late at night to give this little girl a chance to survive but for providing the excellent care to keep her alive.
