Story by Edye Melton.
Greetings pug family! We are in the midst of the dog days of summer and Pug Rescue Austin volunteers are lacing up their sneakers and harnessing their pups in anticipation of Strut Your Mutt, a dog-walking, fun-filled fundraising festival for all ages held by Best Friends Society.
PRA is thrilled to have our team participating in the local event for the 5th year. Without the funds that this event provides, we would be forced to turn away dogs in need. If you have been considering how you can help Pug Rescue Austin in their mission to provide safe, caring and humane refuge for abandoned pugs, signing up to participate in Strut Your Mutt is your answer.
In 2017, because of our generous volunteers, not only did PRA reach our goal, we were the second highest fundraising team in Austin. If that wasn’t great enough, one of our most devoted volunteers, Signe Corbin, raised more than any individual local participant. She enthusiastically welcomes you to join in on the fun and explains why you should below.
“One of the reasons I participate in Strut you Mutt is that it is so simple to join and raise funds for Pug Rescue Austin. Even your $15 registration fee goes to Pug Rescue Austin. Once you register and set up your page your link is easy to share with friends through text messages, emails or on any form of social media. The walk itself is not taxing or long so no need to train beforehand. The more people that join our team, the more funds we can raise. It is surprising how many friends, family and coworkers will donate and every dollar counts. There is no pressure to raise huge amounts. Our strength is in our numbers that join. Every 10 of us that raise $100 adds another $1000 to the pot. The fundraising can be done in the day, at night, in person, on your phone, on you laptop or PC. You can spend as much time as you want trying to raise funds. Again, there is no minimum you have to raise so there is no pressure. Strut Your Mutt gives Pug Rescue Austin the largest and easiest platform to raise our much needed funds and in the past has provided anywhere from 25-35% of our operating budget.”
By creating an individual fundraising page on the PRA Team, not only will you be helping the rescue achieve our fundraising goal, you will most likely reap unexpected personal benefits. Longtime volunteer Liz Farrington writes:
“I signed up for Strut Your Mutt, in 2014, and served as Team Captain. I originally set my personal fundraising goal at 1,000 and the Team Goal at 10,000. Thanks to the incredibly generous pug community in Austin and the efforts of team members and their friends and family nationwide, our team was able to raise more than double, over $20,000, and I personally was able to raise over $2,000. It was the perfect way for my friends and family to show their support for the hard work I was doing for PRA, and to reciprocate for all of the donations and support I’d shown for their causes. It meant so much to me to receive so much support from my friends and family, and fellow pug lovers. And it made everyone feel good to help homeless pugs! I always donate to my friends’ causes, so I’m thankful to have an area for my friends and family to reciprocate. It’s also a great thing to ask for in lieu of birthday or other gifts!”
Liz was also pleased to be able to involve her family in this activity.
“Our kids wear the t-shirts they earned constantly. They’re so proud of the work they’ve done to help homeless pugs in Texas.”
Volunteer support is crucial to the success of this event. You can choose to participate alone or invite friends and family to join you. We hope that the words of these volunteers will convince you to join in on the fun by signing up to participate in Strut Your Mutt with Team PRA.
“SYM is a fantastic way to help generate much needed funds while having fun at the same time. Its a way to participate in helping the rescue for those who are unable to foster as there are so many ways to help other than that. If you can’t donate yourself, start a page and ask your friends and collegues to donate. Its an example of networking at its finest! Its a great way to see folks that I only got to see a couple of times a year during the “strut” part. It personally helped me develop some marketing skills that I hadn’t had exposure to in my professional work.” -Trina Eilers
“It’s for a good cause, you get a free schwag bag, you get to hang out with a bunch of adorable pups, and you get in some fresh air and exercise! It’s a fun event for anyone – families, groups of friends, just you and your dog, etc. I was able to share this event with loved ones by having them support me as I raised money as well as join me in the walk. My mom actually came to Austin one year and we walked together. That same year I was also able to recruit a dog loving coworker to join me. We weren’t super close but are both crazy dog people. It helped us bond and now we’re always participating in animal events around Austin together.” -Melanie Chen
“It’s a fun gathering of like minded people for a great cause! You can meet new friends, get some exercise and help your family and friends raise money and feel good to gain some karma points! It’s a great opportunity to educate the people around you about animal welfare. It’s also a fun/friendly little competition we have going on with other local rescues!”-Laura Luther
“SYM is a great experience. It’s just straight up fun, both the fundraising part and the actual event. Also, it makes you feel great about helping out with such an important cause, and family and friends love to give their support when it’s something you care about, which also feels damn good.” -Alecia Zalot
