Ebenezer isn’t one to dwell on the past. Only those close to him know that at one time he was, at the very least, neglected by the humans that he depended on. His physical condition upon being brought to the attention of Pug Rescue of Austin provided the clues that quickly led the volunteers to determine that the first ten years of his life were not easy. He showed up at the doorstep of a kind couple with a terrible infection in his mouth. This infection led to extensive bone loss in his jaw and a hole in the roof of his mouth that reached into his sinuses. After several surgical attempts to close the hole, including a dental where all of his teeth were removed because of severe decay, it wasn’t until a well renowned oral surgeon donated her services and performed a bone graft that Ebenezer was finally able to put this piece of evidence of his past mistreatment and neglect where it belongs, in the past.
Presently, Ebenezer continues to face challenges. At approximately twelve years of age, he is almost completely blind and deaf. He has significant mobility issues due to arthritis. Most recently, he was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor in his rear leg. Unfortunately, it was determined that the mast cells have spread to lymph nodes in his leg, causing his mobility to decline further and at a rapid rate. During a visit to Westlake Animal Hospital, PRA medical coordinator Signe Corbin decided to give Ebenezer an opportunity to try out a wheeled mobility cart. Not many senior pugs enjoy such novelty items. To everyone’s surprise, he immediately took off as if he had been wheeling around his entire life! Well, perhaps not everyone was surprised. Ebenezer’s foster mom, Kimberly Hanks, states that what they witnessed that day exemplifies Ebenezer’s spirit – nothing stops him. He perseveres and is ready to take on each challenge that life throws him. She is impressed by his patience as she dutifully learns the nuances of setting him up in his wheels every day. These include small yet important details like finding the best socks to prevent injury to his feet if they happen to drag on the ground. Though these wheels have improved Ebby’s quality of life, they do present new challenges and risks that would cause any mother to worry. This foster mom says that her reward is seeing the dog that she cares for happily run around their home enjoying the new-found freedom that his new wheels provide.
Ebenezer’s future is quite bright, thanks to the dedicated volunteers of PRA and the unconditional love of his foster mom, Kimberly. “It’s my promise to him to make sure the rest of his days are filled with love, patience, and happiness no matter what. I am hopelessly in love with him and value the time I’ve been given with this incredible soul!”
The volunteers of Pug Rescue of Austin are dedicated to providing pugs in need with new and improved lives. Ebenezer is only one example of their many successes.
